Jordon Hemingway develops and applies methods and concepts of geochemistry and kinetics to understand how and why the Earth system has evolved throughout its history. He studies both modern and ancient environments. The core of his research addresses a number of fundamental unknowns in Earth science, including: the key controls the global carbon cycle, how physical processes regulate biological and chemical evolution, and why oxygen accumulated in the atmosphere. Critically, addressing these problems requires integrating principles of tectonics, sedimentology, geomorphology, and chemical kinetics with traditional geochemical approaches. He accomplishs this goal by making field- and lab-based measurements and interpreting their results using new theoretical models. This approach aims to mechanistically understand the Earth system.
