I study the signatures and stable isotope composition of microbial lipids in earth surface environments (terrestrial and aquatic) as well as in sedimentary archives, with the purpose to deduce climatic conditions in the geological past. Further, I’m conducting laboratory experiments to better understand the biosynthesis of tetra ether lipids in Archaea – the most abundant microorganisms in the pelagic oceans.
